The Why of CAR-UI
Originating from curiosity, frustration, and a strong opinion on the matter, CAR-UI came into existence in 2014. The desire to articulate and share this opinion with the world in a well-informed manner drove the need for expanded knowledge and a systematic approach to forming opinions. Thus, we conceived and developed the framework for achieving this goal.
Consequently, Car UI was commissioned from 2016 to 2019 to assess popular cars by AutoWeek, the Netherlands' premier car information and review magazine.

Marketing and tech driven interfaces
While appearance often dominates interface reviews, driving experience hinges on functionality, not just looks. Car interfaces are not isolated screens; they serve specific purposes in varying contexts. At Car UI, our emphasis lies on evaluating the usability of (digital) car interfaces and designing to enhance this functionality.
Safety is a pivotal concern in the automotive sector, particularly regarding device use while driving. Drawing from the insights gained through Car UI studies, Hike One plans to contribute to enhancing user safety. Beyond the automotive realm, we explore interactions between humans and machines.

Our approach
We believe in firsthand experience for forming opinions on interfaces. Hence, we established a Car UI testing center to rigorously assess current and new digital car interfaces. We evaluate aspects like identity, brand experience, screen quality, and interface operation. Our assessments include predefined top tasks, focusing on commonly used features.

Top tasks as a foundation
Given the multifunctional role of digital car interfaces, we created a shortlist of tasks based on commonly used functions. Tasks range from adjusting temperature to navigating or using parking assistance. We evaluate tasks based on completion time, complexity, and readability, with a specific focus on tasks performed while driving.

The Website as a Dialogue Catalyst
To transparently share our insights and experiences, we developed a website showcasing our motivations and reviews, along with active social media engagement. This visibility provides platforms to share opinions and initiate discussions on safety, brand, and user experience. Notable examples include collaborative efforts with Autoweek and participation in relevant meetups like Design by Fire.

Autoweek as a Tech Industry Platform
Autoweek invited us to review digital screens across various car brands, ranging from entry-level to luxurious models and electric vehicles (EVs). Surprisingly, entry-level models often outperformed top-tier counterparts in ease of use and safety. Our reviews spanned several magazine issues, encompassing approximately 30 pages.
